Faculty/Student Course
E-mail List Serves
The Office of Records and Registration in
cooperation with Computing and Network Services maintains an e-mail list
serve service for the faculty and students enrolled in the current semester.
Faculty and students are able to contact those
enrolled in a given course through a common email.
Here is how it works:
- An e-mail is created for the course when the course is officially
activated on the course schedule.
- The e-mail is the complete course identification number plus the
term of the course @alpha1.ais.iit.edu. For example CS 105001 for the
2003 summer semester is CS10500103M@alpha1.ais.iit.edu.
- Emails are created for each individual course section.
- The list serve is only open to assigned instructors and those registered
in the course.
- The e-mails used in the list serve are those listed in the Student
Information System. For students it is the e-mail listed on Web for
Students and for faculty it is the e-mail listed on Web for Faculty.
- You may only e-mail the list serve through the server that is listed
for your e-mail in the Student Information System. Those using alternative
e-mails, other than those listed on the Student Information System,
will be returned as invalid. When using these lists it is important
to send from the address defined for you in Web for Students / SIS (faculty).
Furthermore, since these lists don't know anything about aliases, and
while to the mail server an address such as amit.patel@iit.edu might
be just as good as pateami1@iit.edu, it is not equivalent when sending
to the list. The recommendation for anyone desiring to send to these
lists is to update all the email clients you use to remove any references
you have to aliases, and use the actual email address assigned to you,
and verify that it is the address stored for you in Web for Students
or SIS. The setup for Eudora is in Tools -> Options...
-> Getting Started -> Return Address. The setup
for Outlook is in Tools -> Accounts -> Properties
-> Reply Address.
- List serves will be active until one month after the end date of
the semesters.
