Satisfactory Academic Progress (Federal Policy)
All students receiving federal financial assistance must demonstrate
reasonable academic progress toward graduation from IIT. Reasonable
academic progress includes both a satisfactory cumulative grade
point average and a major grade point average and sufficient credit
hours earned each semester toward the completion of a degree program.
IIT has established a Reasonable Academic Progress Policy in compliance
with federal and state regulations. Failure to comply with IIT's
Reasonable Academic Progress Policy will lead to the student's
losing eligibility for financial assistance.
To maintain eligibility students must:
| 1. |
Attempt no more than 150 percent of the number
of hours required to graduate from his or her academic program.
A student in this category is not eligible to receive financial
aid. |
| 2. |
Successfully complete two-thirds or 67 percent of total
hours attempted. For a first violation, the student will be
considered on probation for the succeeding academic year and
federal financial aid will be continued. After the second violation,
a student's eligibility for federal financial aid will be terminated. |
| 3. |
Earn a cumulative grade point average consistent with graduation
requirements and must have a minimum 2.0 GPA after attempting
61 or more credit hours. For a first violation, the student
will be considered on probation for the succeeding academic
year and federal financial aid will be continued. After the
second violation, a student's eligibility for federal financial
aid will be terminated. |
| 4. |
Not receive unsuccessful completions (grades, E, W, I) in
credit hours that equal or exceed one-third the maximum time
frame. A student in this category is not eligible to receive
financial aid. |

Eligibility for Financial Assistance
Eligibility for renewal of financial aid is reviewed at the end
of the academic year. Students will receive written notification
of their status for the following academic year. Students on probation
will continue to receive federal financial aid the following academic
year. However, students placed on suspension status will no longer
receive federal financial aid.
Transfer Credits
Transfer credits accepted by IIT are included in the maximum time frame policy. Students who transfer into IIT will be treated the same as students who have initially attended IIT.
Major or Degree Changes
Students who change majors or degrees will not have their timeframe re-assessed. It will continue to calculate and include all the courses that the student has taken. The 150 percent timeframe
will not be adjusted for major changes. There is no limit on the number of times a student can change majors or degrees. IIT has few, if any, students pursuing a second degree. Therefore,
the policy does not consider these students.
Repeat
If a student wishes to repeat a course for which a passing grade
was earned (A, B, C, D), financial aid may not be used to pay
for the course. However, if a student earned an E grade and is
repeating the course and replacing the E grade with a passing
grade, a student can use financial aid to pay for the course.
The federal Pell Grant and Illinois MAP programs are not subject
to courses that are repeated.
Reinstatement
of Aid
After a student's aid has been terminated for lack of satisfactory academic progress, a student must wait a year before the financial aid is considered for reinstatement. Our office will automatically
review all students for reinstatement. In any event, a student has the right to appeal our decision at anytime by submitting a letter and documents to support the appeal. If a student's appeal
is reviewed before the next spring term, he or she will receive aid for the following semester.
Appeal
Students may appeal to be removed from suspension status. The appeal
process must be initiated by completing an appeal form. If the
appeal is granted, the student's eligibility may be renewed within
the year of suspension.
