Types of Financial Aid

Financial aid is the total of grants, scholarships, Federal Work Study, loans and other resources for which students may be eligible. The financial aid process begins when a student completes and submits the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each award year. At IIT, the Office of Financial Aid manages the financial aid process for all undergraduate students.

Financial aid funds are generally credited directly to your tuition account. However, financial aid funds cannot be credited to your account until promissory notes are signed, entrance interviews are completed, and federal verification documents are submitted, if necessary.

Student Employment Handbook

Up to $2,500 of Federal Work Study (FWS) may be awarded to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. IIT strongly encourages all students who wish to be considered for FWS to submit the FAFSA to the U.S. Department of Education by the April 15 deadline. These funds are limited and awarded on a first come, first served basis.

The FWS program is an employment program that requires students to earn their award amount through work. The award listed on the financial aid award letter is the maximum amount that a student can earn during the academic year. To accept this award, the student does not have to return the financial aid award letter.

Work-study students receive a paycheck every two weeks based on the number of hours worked and hourly rate of pay. After a student earns the full FWS award, the student’s employment ends, unless the IIT department employer offers to pay the student employee’s wages from the department’s budget account. To determine the required forms for FWS, use the Student Employment Interactive Guide.

Limited part-time employment is available on and off campus in the greater Chicago area. Information on employment opportunities, co-op, and internships arrangements may be obtained from IIT’s Career Management Center.
