IIT Online Registration, Policies and Procedures
Fall 2005

IIT Online enables people to remotely participate in on-campus classes as IIT students through two distinct modes: live television at many receiving sites throughout the Chicago area and via the Internet at the location of choice. Some instructors and/or company sites require local students to attend campus for exams or special class sessions during the semester. The Internet lectures are created from the live lecture and posted within 24-48 hours of the live class so that all students can follow the same syllabus as on-campus and television students. IIT Online students earn credit for degrees in the same way as students attending classes on-campus. For information about educational programs, admissions, registration and online technologies visit www.iit-online.iit.edu.

IIT Online provides services to students taking televised and Internet courses through three resources: IIT Online Client Services and IIT Online Student Support Services administered by the Graduate College and IIT Online Technical Services administered by the Office of Technology Services. IIT Online Client Services provides ombudsman services for the student, registration and admissions information, and other academic services. IIT Online Student Support Services manages course and classroom scheduling, course material distribution and exam administration for all IIT Online students. IIT Online Technical Services manages the broadcast of televised courses and posting of courses as streamed-video and materials on the Internet. For further information or assistance, students should contact:

Admissions and Registration Procedures for
All Distance Learning Students

All distance learning students must be admitted to IIT as either undergraduate or graduate students before registering for courses. To do so, they must meet existing IIT admissions requirements and standards. New applicants should visit the web site www.iit-online.iit.edu for admissions information, on-line admissions applications and registration instructions. When registering off-campus, students can access online registration through Web for Students, register in-person at the Main Campus or Rice Campus, mail registration, or fax registration to the fax number listed on the registration or change of registration forms.

When completing a registration, please note the following:

Courses are designated by academic department, course number, and section number. If registering for a receive television site, the site code denotes where the student will view the course. For example, CS 546-091 is offered by the Computer Science department (CS), the specific course (546) is Parallel Processing, and it is originating from main campus (091). The site code MA designates the student will view the course at Motorola, Arlington Heights on a paper registration form. The site name can be selected from a drop-down menu that will be presented during online registration.

To distinguish between courses available via two-way videoconferencing, televised courses, rebroadcasts, delayed broadcasts and those available via the Internet, the following should be noted:

1. Site/Section Restrictions: Course site and section restrictions exist to prevent incorrect registration. Example: A corporate site student is not allowed to register for the videoconference section of a course because the technology is not available at the site for educational use. However, a corporate site student may register in the televised or Internet section of the same course.

2. Interactive Videoconference Course Sections: All videoconference courses list IV as the location (how the course originates) in the schedule. See IIT Online Section Code Descriptions for site restrictions at the end of this section. Students will indicate the appropriate campus as the viewing site when registering.

3. Televised Live Course Sections: All televised courses list TV as the location (how the course originates). See IIT Online Section Code Descriptions for restrictions at the end of this section. Students will indicate the specific viewing site when registering. Registration for Computer Science 480 at Oakton Community College, Ray Hartstein Campus is shown below.

4. Televised Rebroadcast Course Sections: Televised rebroadcast courses list TV as the location (how the course originates) and are the second broadcast of courses that aired live at an earlier date or time. These course sections end in 098 and are open to all students at televised sites. Students will indicate the specific viewing site code when registering.

5. Televised Delayed-Broadcast Course Sections: Televised delayed broadcast courses list TV as the location (how the course originates) and are taped at an earlier date or time. These courses end in 090 and are open to all students at all televised sites. Students will indicate the specific viewing site code when registering.

6. Internet Course Sections: Internet courses list IN as the location (how the course originates) and end with a 251, 253 or 254 section number. See IIT Online Section Code Descriptions at the end of this section for restrictions. Students will indicate a site name or site code when registering.

7. Using The Correct Site Code For Internet Sections: The Internet site codes and the corresponding section numbers are used to determine the physical location of students and to assist student support staff with examination coordination. Therefore, it is very important that all Internet students follow the procedures as outlined below:

  1. All courses on the Internet end with a 251, 253 or 254 section number.
  2. Internet students that are affiliated with corporate sites should register using the corporate site code normally used for televised courses.
  3. Internet students in the local Chicago Metropolitan Area, that are not affiliated with a corporate site or the Main, Moffett or Rice campuses, should use the IS (Internet In State) site code and make arrangements for examinations as noted for local Internet students in the Examinations and Proctors section.
  4. Internet students who normally take live or televised courses at the Main Campus should use the IC (Internet Main Campus Chicago) site code and plan to take examinations at the Main Campus.
  5. Internet students who normally take live or televised courses at the Rice campus should use the IX (Internet Rice Campus Wheaton) site code and plan to take examinations at the Rice Campus.
  6. Internet students outside the State of Illinois should use the IO (Internet Out of State) site code and make arrangements for examinations as noted for long distance Internet students in the Examinations and Proctors section.
  7. Internet students in foreign countries that are not affiliated with IIT India International programs should register for the site IF (Internet Foreign) site code and contact IIT Online Student Support Services by email: online.studentsvc@iit.edu, phone 312.567.3460 regarding examinations and proctors.

Payment Information

Payment, tuition deferment application, and tuition reimbursement sponsor letters must be submitted according to IIT tuition policies, which include payment plan options and methods.

Internet Course Hardware and Software Requirements

Students registering for any course ending with a 251, 253 or 254 section number should check the current computer hardware and software requirements by visiting the web site www.iit-online.iit.edu and selecting Technical Requirements. From this web site students may also gain access to the streamed-video lectures of the course and course materials. All lectures and class materials are password protected. Officially registered IIT students may obtain passwords, by request, at the web site. Students may report technical problems and request help from this location. For more information about Internet course technology, contact Brian Lukanic, Internet Media Director by email to lukanic@iit.edu or by phone at 312.567.5228.

University Deadlines

All students should refer to the semester calendar. Standard university deadlines apply to all distance learning students, televised, videoconference and Internet courses.

E-Mail

All IIT students are assigned a university provided email address after admission. Information about configuring or forwarding email can be located through the Office of Technology Services website.

Delivery of Course Material

Courier service is provided to many televised viewing sites based on current semester enrollment. Check with your site coordinator for the current courier delivery schedule or contact the IIT Online Student Support Services office by email to online.studentsvc@iit.edu or by phone 312.567.3460. Courier service is suspended during semester breaks and intersessions. Look for an announcement of suspended service at your site.

Internet delivered courses usually include electronic access to course material. Some course materials may be provided for pick-up by local students or may be delivered to off-campus students. Off-campus students will be sent course material via the most cost-effective and timely service available. For more information, contact the IIT Online Student Support Services office by email to online.studentsvc@iit.edu or by phone 312. 567.3460.

Examinations and Proctors

All Distance Learning Courses: In all cases, IIT reserves the right to qualify or disqualify exam proctors, whether at televised sites or other remote sites. All students registered in Internet courses are required to take examinations on the same day as the "live" class, unless otherwise indicated by the course instructor. Students with course examination time conflicts will be considered on an individual basis. For more information about examination schedules and proctors, contact Charles Scott at IIT Online Student Support Services by email to scott@iit.edu or by phone 312.567.5217.

Televised Courses: Students registered in these courses will take examinations at the location(s) designated by the course instructors. Some televised course instructors do require local area students to attend examinations on campus. Others allow students to take examinations remotely at the televised site where the student is registered. Proctors are required for all examinations and quizzes unless otherwise instructed by the faculty teaching the course. IIT Online Student Support Services coordinates examination dates and proctors with televised sites. Contact the office at 312.567.3460 or by email to online.studentsvc@.iit.edu if you have questions regarding this process.

Internet Courses: The location of the student and affiliation with a corporate televised viewing site determines where examinations are administered.

  1. In State students registered in Internet courses who are not affiliated with an existing televised corporate site and who cannot normally attend the Main or Rice campuses for examinations should contact a local community college to make arrangements for testing and seek approval of the proctor from IIT at least two weeks prior to the administration of the examination. For approval, please contact Charles Scott at IIT Online Student Support Services by email to scott@iit.edu or by phone at 312.567.5217. Local students may be required to attend examinations, by the course instructor, at Main or Rice campus or may request to have examinations administered at these campuses.
  2. Local students within the Chicago Metropolitan Area who are affiliated with a televised company site take examinations at the location(s) designated by the course instructor (see televised courses).
  3. Local students registered in Internet courses using the Main (IC) or Rice (IX) campus site codes take examinations at the respective campus.
  4. Out of State Internet students (outside of the State of Illinois) are required to identify acceptable proctors in their local area and seek approval of the proctor from IIT at least two weeks prior to the administration of the examination. For approval, please contact Charles Scott at IIT Online Student Support Services by email to scott@iit.edu or by phone at 312.567.5217. A community college testing center is an ideal choice.
  5. Students in foreign countries (other than India) registered in the Foreign Internet site must contact Charles Scott, email to scott@iit.edu to discuss examination and proctoring at the beginning of the semester. Students registered in programs in India should contact D. Rajagoplan by email to drajgop@miel.mot.com.

Alternative Lecture Delivery/Tape Requests

When illness or a business task requires a class absence, students who normally view televised lectures may have the option of making up missed lectures by viewing these lectures on the Internet if the course is being delivered in Internet mode as well. A complete list of current Internet courses can be found at www.iit-online.iit.edu. The IIT Online Technical Services office provides access to Internet lectures and class materials. Visit www.iit-online.iit.edu to obtain password access to the online lectures or contact 312.567.3452 for assistance.

IIT can usually provide a tape of a missed lecture if the lecture is not available online. The charge is $20 per hour for videotaping and the student account is billed after the applicable semester has ended. Tapes should be requested in advance whenever possible. All tapes must be returned to the IIT Online Student Support Services office after viewing. All course lectures are protected by copyright. IIT retains exclusive rights to duplication of course material via videotape or other electronic means. To order videotapes, contact IIT Online Student Support Services at 312.567.3460.

Textbook Orders

Barnes and Noble operate the on-campus bookstore and can supply Main campus students with textbooks for distance learning courses. However, distance learning students who view class off-campus either at televised viewing locations or through the Internet should use MBS Direct as the text book supplier. In-stock textbook orders will be shipped within one business day. Shipping options include UPS, FedEx or US Postal Service. Shipping charges will be applied to textbook orders, however sales tax will not be applied.

IIT Online Policies and Procedures

Current IIT Online Policies and Procedures are available at the web site www.iit-online.iit.edu.

Internet Site Codes

All course registrations for Internet courses require a site code selection. Internet students affiliated with participating corporate sites for televised viewing should register for the corporate televised site code. All other students should select one of the Internet sites listed below:

Internet Site Name
Site Code
Internet Main Campus, Chicago
IC
Internet Rice Campus, Wheaton
IX
Internet In State
IS
Internet Out of State
IO

For actual Internet exam administration protocols (for In State, Out of State and Foreign sites) and room locations (for the IIT Campus sites) contact the IIT Online Student Support Services office by email to online.studentsvc@iit.edu, phone (312) 567-3460..

Televised Sites Codes

All television students should use the Site Code to identify the televised site of choice when registering using the paper registration form. Televised site codes are listed for both corporate and public sites at the end of this section. When registering online through Web-For-Students site options are presented by company name or public institution name. Attendance at corporate sites is limited to current employees only. All public sites have space limitations. For more information, contact IIT Online Client Services by email to online.clientsvc@iit.edu or by phone 312.567.3167.

IIT has cooperative arrangements with other institutions through which the general public has access to view televised courses. Public site addresses and site codes are listed later in this section. Check for site closings on Fridays and Saturdays. Visit the web site www.iit-online.iit.edu for updates to the site listings, the site map and other site information.

Televised courses may also be viewed at the Main Campus, the IIT Rice Campus, located in Wheaton, and the IIT Moffett Campus, located in Summit-Argo.
