I
Incomplete Work
The "I" grade indicates that the student's work to date is of passing quality but is incomplete for reasons acceptable to the instructor. The student must have substantial equity in the course with no more than four weeks of course work remaining to be completed. A grade of "I" will be assigned only in case of illness or for unusual or unforeseeable circumstances that were not encountered by other students in the class and that prevent the student from completing the course requirements by the end of the semester. Prior to assignment of the "I" grade, the student and instructor should reach a written agreement concerning the work still outstanding. The work must be completed by no later than the end of the sixth week of class of the next regular (fall or spring) semester. A grade of "I" may be removed with the approval of the academic unit head and the Associate Dean of the Undergraduate College, after all remaining work is completed and the instructor assigns a regular grade. If no regular grade has been received in the Office of Student Records and Registration by the above deadline, the "I" grade will revert to a grade of E.

I
Incomplete work
The "I" grade indicates that the student's work to date is of passing quality but is incomplete for reasons acceptable to the instructor. The grade of "I" may be assigned only in the case of illness or for unusual or unforeseeable circumstances that were not encountered by other students in the class and that prevent the student from completing the course requirements by the end of the semester. "I" grades should not be used to allow a student to repeat a course. Prior to assignment of the "I" grade, the student and the instructor should agree on the work that needs to be completed. The work must be completed by no later than the end of the sixth week of class of the next regular (fall or spring) semester. A grade of "I" will be removed with the approval of the department chair and the dean of the Graduate College after all remaining work is completed and the instructor assigns a regular grade. If no regular grade has been received in the Office of Student Records and Registration by the deadline, the "I" grade will revert to a grade of "E." No exceptions will be granted except through appeal to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs of the Graduate College. In the case of research courses, i.e. CHEM 591 and CHEM 691, the grade of "I" may be assigned for the reasons listed above. Once assigned, the grade of "I" will remain on the student's transcript until the research as determined by the research professor is completed. "I" grades should be removed as soon as possible and no later than the start of the semester in which the student plans to graduate.
